Finding Inspiration at IAPS (The International Association of Pastel Societies) Convention, June 2024

Sometimes life gets messy, so it becomes hard to find focus and inspiration. That is what happened to me in the beginning of 2024. I just could not get my creative juices flowing so to speak. Lucky for me, I signed up months in advance for the IAPS Convention that is held every 2 years in the lovely Albuquerque, New Mexico. I had been once before and knew it would be a great kick start for me.

I belong to both the Pastel Society of Southern California and the Northwest Pastel Society which means that there were so many of my artist friends there to inspire me. I also had the privilege of hanging out with some of the best Pastel artist-instructors in the world. I soaked in the amazing art and was able to take some workshops and attend demonstrations, as well as make new friends and connections.

My favorite experience was a 2-day workshop called “Jam Session” with Diana Sanford. Not only is Diana a talented artist, but she’s also worked as a psychotherapist for over 30 years. Her workshop explored creating by engaging the right side of the brain and making freely without judgment. And let me just say, this was just what I needed. We had so much fun–I ended up painting 12 surfaces! This experience prepared me to get more out of the demonstrators and workshops I attended the following days.

Sometimes making art is just hard. We need inspiration and support. If you ever feel too tired or uninspired, I recommend painting with a friend, taking an art class, or attending a painting workshop.

Make that first mark, and keep going.
